Diving into the Spice Island
It has already been a year since I visited Sri Lanka for Birding during last year’s Lunar New Year. For 2025, we decided to go diving in Ambon.
Speaking of Ambon, several marine creatures bear its name, with the most notable ones being the Ambon chromis and Ambon scorpionfish. In Japan, the Ambon chromis is considered a rare species, and capturing images of its adult darting in and out of distant coral was quite a challenge. On the other hand, in Southeast Asia, it is a common species, and juvenile fish elegantly fluttering their tail fins can often be seen. However, strangely enough, I didn’t come across a single one in Ambon.
昨年の旧正月にスリランカを訪れてから早一年。2025年はアンボンでダイビングをすることにしました。
アンボンといえば、その名を冠した生物がいくつかおり、代表的なものにアンボンスコーピオンフィッシュやアンボンスズメダイがいます。アンボンスズメダイは日本では希少種であり、遠くのサンゴの隙間を出入りする成魚の撮影には苦労しました。一方で、東南アジアでは一般種とされ、尾鰭を華麗にはためかせる幼魚もよく見られます。ところが、なぜかアンボンでは一度も目にすることがありませんでした。

Ambon Bay is home to numerous dive sites, and this time, I had the opportunity to explore around eight of them. Each site was teeming with a diverse array of critters, truly befitting a macro diving paradise, making for an incredibly fulfilling experience. The COVID-19 pandemic dealt a devastating blow to Ambon’s dive resorts. Although many are still in the process of recovery, the resort we stayed at, Spice Island Divers & Resort, offers a refined all-inclusive dive package, which provided an exceptionally satisfying experience.
アンボン湾には数多くのダイブサイトがあり、今回はそのうち8か所ほどを潜ることができました。どのポイントも、マクロダイビングの聖地にふさわしい多様なクリッターを擁しており、非常に充実したダイビングを楽しめました。コロナ禍によりアンボンのダイブリゾートは壊滅的な打撃を受け、現在もなお復興の途上にありますが、今回お世話になったSpice Island Divers & Resortは、洗練されたオールインクルーシブのダイブパッケージを提供しており、満足度は非常に高かったです。
The quality of the meals—morning, noon, and night—was outstanding, surpassing any resort I’ve visited in Southeast Asia. The fluffy pancakes, exquisite seafood dishes, and perfectly cooked steaks were incredibly delicious and generously portioned. Additionally, the resort’s convenient location near the airport and its well-maintained, beautiful diving facilities added to the overall appeal.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to spot the elusive psychedelic frogfish this time, but I’m already looking forward to the chance to revisit. That said, when it comes to the diversity of muck diving, Lembeh may have the upper hand, making it the stronger contender overall.
特に朝昼晩の食事は群を抜くクオリティで、東南アジアのどのリゾートよりも素晴らしかったです。ふわふわのパンケーキ、絶品の魚介料理やステーキは、驚くほど美味しく、ボリュームも十分でした。また、空港至近のアクセスの良さや、よく整備された美しいダイビング施設も魅力的でした。
今回は肝心のサイケデリックカエルアンコウを観察することが叶いませんでしたが、再訪の機会をうかがいたいと思います。ただし、マックダイビングの多様性という点ではレンベのほうが優れており、総合的にはそちらに軍配が上がるかもしれません。
Since this was a muck diving trip, I focused on snoot photography for over 80% of my dives. The concentrated light enhances the texture of the subject and helps separate it from the background. I used the Marelux SOFT Pro (now discontinued). While I prefer the Retra LSD for its wider working distance and stronger light output, the SOFT Pro is convenient because its beam size can be easily adjusted with a dial.
As always, I used my Sony a7RIV. When shooting with a snoot in dark environments, a target light is essential for autofocus. However, since snoot photography requires precise light control, it’s also crucial to eliminate unwanted illumination from a constantly active light. I was once again reminded that I need to get a shutter-synchronized light cutoff model (for some reason, I still haven’t gotten one).
This dive trip was full of technical troubles. The SOFT snoot’s built-in target light became unusable due to a malfunctioning INR18350 charger. I also accidentally snapped an optical cable due to a housing operation mistake. To make things worse, one of my float arms disappeared during a night dive, and I also lost the diffuser for my Z330 strobe—it was a series of unfortunate events.
Despite these issues, the marine life was abundant, and I never got bored since there was always something exciting to shoot. The dive guides were excellent, constantly spotting new subjects. Normally, I decline nudibranch, but this time, I decided to give it a try. Though I haven’t included them in this article, I took more nudibranch photos than ever before (I might write a separate article about them later).
Still, my biggest regret was missing out on the Psychedelic Frogfish. Apparently, there haven’t been any sightings for over six months, making it an increasingly rare species. Next time, I’ll check for the latest updates on sightings before booking my trip to plan accordingly.
マックダイブということもあり、8割以上のダイビングでスヌート撮影に集中しました。凝縮された光が被写体の質感をより際立たせ、背景に埋もれがちな被写体を分離する効果もあります。スヌートにはMarelux SOFT Pro（現在は販売終了）を使用しました。ワーキングディスタンスが広く、より強い光を当てられる点ではRetraのLSDのほうが好みですが、SOFT Proは照射範囲をダイヤルで簡単に変更できる点が便利です。
カメラはいつも通りSony a7RIVを使用しました。スヌート撮影をしながら暗所でAFを作動させるには、ターゲットライトが必須です。一方で、スヌートは精密な光の調整が求められるため、つけっぱなしのライトによる影響を排除せねばなりません。シャッター連動で消灯するモデルを入手しなければならないと改めて感じました（なぜかまだ持っていない）。
そして、今回のダイビングではトラブルが続きました。SOFTスヌートのウリであるターゲットライトは、INR18350用の充電器が故障して使用できませんでした。また、ハウジングの操作ミスでOpticalケーブルを断線させてしまいました。さらには、フロートの片方がナイトダイブ中に消え去り、Z330のディフューザーも紛失するなど、散々な結果です。
生物については、撮影のしがいがあるものが至るところにいるため、飽きることはありません。ガイドも非常に優秀で、次々と被写体を見つけてくれます。普段はウミウシのガイドは断るのですが、今回はあえて受け入れてみました。記事には掲載していませんが、これまでになくウミウシを撮影しました（後日、雑記として記事にするかもしれません）。
とはいえ、やはり心残りだったのはサイケデリックフロッグフィッシュです。なんと半年以上も観察例がないようで、ますます希少な存在になっているようでした。次回は、予約前にこの種の最新情報を確認し、計画を練りたいと思います。
